Hampir seumur hidupnya, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) tak pernah bertemu ayahnya. Dua puluh tahun yang lalu, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), ayah Sam tiba-tiba menghilang tanpa bekas. Terobsesi menemukan ayahnya yang hilang, Sam pun menghabiskan seumur hidupnya mempelajari komputer dan teknologi dunia virtual.
Suatu ketika, Sam diminta oleh Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner)untuk menyelidiki sinyal aneh yang datang dari video game buatan ayah Sam. Saat menyelidiki sinyal aneh inilah Sam tiba-tiba tersedot ke dunia virtual. Sam tersedot masuk ke dalam dunia yang seharusnya hanya ada dalam video game. Untungnya ada Quorra (Olivia Wilde) yang lantas membantu Sam mencari ayahnya yang selama ini hilang.
Tanpa sepengetahuan Sam, Kevin ternyata terjebak di dunia virtual di mana ia harus bertarung layaknya para gladiator di jaman Romawi kuno. Seiring berjalannya waktu, Kevin pun makin tua dan tak bisa selamanya bertahan di dunia yang sangat keras ini. Bila Sam terlambat datang menyelamatkan sang ayah, bisa jadi ayah-anak ini tak akan lagi bisa bertemu selamanya.
Hampir tiga dasawarsa sudah sejak publik dijejali impian tentang masa depan lewat film bertajuk TRON. Kini, setelah tak ada lagi yang berharap film itu dibuatkan sekuel, tiba-tiba saja muncul TRON: LEGACY yang jelas-jelas jadi kelanjutan dari film yang dirilis tahun 1982 itu. Menarik memang karena film ini seolah jadi 'revisi' dari versi pertama yang memang masih minim dalam hal visual effect.
Mungkin karena berangkat dari ide yang sama pula lantas muncul kesan kalau TRON: LEGACY ini hanya mengumbar teknologi visual effect. Tak bisa disalahkan memang karena film ini memang dibuat sebagai sarana hiburan. Dunia virtual video game yang ada dalam film ini memang terlihat meyakinkan meskipun kita sadar kalau itu hanya tipuan mata. Dari sekian banyak efek, bisa jadi yang paling menarik memang adalah proses pembuatan clone dari Jeff Bridges yang terlihat masih sangat muda.
Terlepas dari sisi visual, sebenarnya TRON: LEGACY ini tak menjanjikan apa-apa. Kisah tentang masa depan, dunia virtual, dan lain sebagainya sudah berkali-kali ditawarkan Hollywood dan sepertinya yang ini juga bukan sesuatu yang benar-benar baru. Alur kisah yang ditawarkan pun kurang menggigit dan seolah hanya ada untuk merangkai sekian banyak sajian visual yang memang memukau. Untungnya, akting Jeff Bridges masih sedikit menyelamatkan film ini.
Terlepas dari kekurangan itu, TRON: LEGACY masih cukup menghibur. Sepertinya memang itulah tujuan dibuatnya film ini. TRON: LEGACY dibuat untuk menghibur penonton walaupun setelah itu tak banyak lagi yang tersisa di benak penonton.

Almost all his life, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) had never met his father. Twenty years ago, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), Sam's father suddenly disappears without a trace. Obsessed with finding the lost father, Sam had spent a lifetime studying the virtual world of computers and technology.
One time, Sam was asked by Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) to investigate a strange signal coming from a video game made by Sam's father. While investigating this strange signal Sam suddenly sucked into a virtual world. Sam sucked into the world that should only exist in video games. Fortunately there Quorra (Olivia Wilde), who then helps Sam find his father who had been missing.
Unbeknownst to Sam, Kevin was trapped in a virtual world where he must fight like the gladiators in ancient Rome. Over time, Kevin was getting old and can not forever survive in this world that is very hard. When Sam came too late to save his father, could be the father of these children will no longer be able to see forever.
Nearly three decades since the public already crammed full of dreams of the future through the film titled TRON. Now, after no more that hope made a sequel to the film, suddenly appeared TRON: Legacy obviously be a continuation of the film was released in 1982. Interesting indeed because of this movie as a 'revision' of the first version which is still minimal in terms of visual effect.
Perhaps because of departing from the same idea then came the impression that TRON: Legacy is only indulgence in visual effects technology. I do not blame indeed because this film was made as a means of entertainment. Virtual world of video games that are in this film do look convincing although we realize that it is only a trick of the eye. Of the many effects, it could be the most interesting is the process of making a clone of Jeff Bridges who looks very young.
Apart from the visual side, actually TRON: Legacy is not promising anything. The story about the future, virtual worlds, and so many times already and it seems that Hollywood has to offer is also not something really new. The flow of the story offered was less biting and if there's only so much to assemble visual presentation is stunning. Fortunately, Jeff Bridges is still a bit of acting to save this movie.
Apart from the lack of it, TRON: Legacy is still quite entertaining. Looks like that's the purpose of making of this film. TRON: Legacy is made to entertain the audience even after that nothing much is left in the minds of the audience.
